Healthcare Metal Recycling Program in Florida

SaniTrax's healthcare metal recycling program accepts biologically contaminated metal from Florida healthcare facilities. We treat it through our validated steam autoclave at our licensed Plant City site, then route the recovered metal to a permitted metal recycler instead of a landfill.

You get metal diverted from disposal, plus documentation you can put into diversion tracking, sustainability reports, and ESG disclosures. This is one of the few options among companies offering recycling of treated medical waste operating in Florida, that legally handles the treatment step in-house rather than subcontracting it.

Many national medical waste vendors aren’t set up to offer metal recovery as a routed service. Because SaniTrax operates its own permitted autoclave, we can decontaminate the material first, which is what makes recycling possible at all.

What We Accept

The program is built for metal waste generated during patient care, procedures, and facility operations, separated from the general biomedical waste stream at the source. Single-use surgical instrument recycling is the largest category, but the program covers a broader range of metal waste generated in clinical spaces.

Accepted materials

Single-use metal surgical instruments and tools
Medical equipment components (metal parts, not whole units)
Metal fixtures and hardware from clinical spaces
Other biologically contaminated metal waste generated in patient care areas

Not accepted through this program

Sharps disposal items (needles, syringes, blades)
Chemotherapy-contaminated metal
Radioactive material
Mercury-containing devices
Electronics and batteries, which are handled through our universal waste program
Whole functioning equipment (the program covers components, not full units)

If you’re not sure whether a specific item qualifies, ask before segregating. Correct sorting at the source is what keeps the program compliant and the diversion documentation defensible.

How the Program Works

The workflow is designed to slot into existing waste segregation practices, not replace them.

01

Segregation and collection at the point of generation

Metal waste is sorted into designated containers, separate from red bag waste, sharps, and other regulated streams. We coordinate with your EVS and facilities teams on placement, labeling, and pickup schedules. We also provide staff training on waste segregation to keep the workflow clean over time.

02

Steam sterilization at Plant City

Collected material is transported to our permitted treatment facility in Plant City for a validated steam autoclave cycle. Treatment runs in accordance with applicable Florida Department of Health permits and rules. The autoclave operates at 285°F for a minimum of 25 minutes, with weekly efficacy testing to confirm inactivation of microorganisms.

03

Transfer to a permitted metal recycler

Once treated, the material leaves our site for a permitted metal recycler rather than a landfill. This is the step that separates recovery from disposal: the metal re-enters the manufacturing supply chain rather than getting buried.

04

Diversion documentation returned to the facility

You receive records of what was collected, when it was treated, and where the recovered metal was routed. That paper trail is what makes the diversion claim defensible in reporting.

Chain of custody

Every stage is documented, from pickup manifest through treatment records through transfer to the recycler. If you need to trace a specific pickup or demonstrate that metal from your site actually reached a recycler rather than a landfill, the records support that trace.

Medical Waste Recycling Reporting and Waste Diversion

For sustainability leads, ESG teams, and Green Teams, the documentation output is often as important as the diversion itself. A diverted stream you can’t report doesn’t help your metrics.

The program produces records that feed directly into diversion-rate calculations and sustainability disclosures. You can incorporate program data into internal ESG reporting, board updates, Practice Greenhealth submissions, and Joint Commission Sustainable Healthcare Certification frameworks.

We don’t publish diversion percentages, tonnage estimates, or CO₂-equivalent claims on this page. Those figures depend on your facility’s specific waste profile, and we only report numbers we can actually document from your account. If you need estimated diversion projections during an assessment, we build those from your waste audit data, not from generic industry averages.

Compliance and Permitting

The healthcare metal recycling program operates under the same regulatory framework that governs SaniTrax’s other waste streams:

Florida Department of Health Rule 64E-16 governs biomedical waste treatment, transport, and documentation. Our Plant City site operates under Chapter 64E-16 compliance and the applicable authority of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Weekly autoclave efficacy testing confirms that the sterilization cycle inactivates microorganisms as required.
Chain-of-custody documentation covers every stage from pickup through transfer to the metal recycler.

The recycler at the receiving end is separately permitted to accept treated metal. That two-permit structure, healthcare waste treatment on our side plus metal recycling on theirs, is what makes the program legal end to end.

Ready to Start Diverting Metal from Landfills?

The healthcare metal recycling program adapts to your volume and workflow. Whether you’re managing sustainability metrics for a hospital system, running facilities at a surgery center, or handling waste segregation at a dental or veterinary practice, the output is the same across sizes: metal recovered, landfill avoided, documentation returned.

Request a metal recycling assessment to walk through your current waste profile, segregation setup, and what a metal recovery workflow would look like at your site.
